The time has come. In these dark times, a joyous celebration has been bestowed upon us. Finally, a spark of light in the darkness of 2020. That’s right, a new Spiderman game is coming out. Not next year, not the year after, but THIS year. THIS holiday season!

After the breath of fresh air that was Spiderman PS4, we now have a trailer for the new Spiderman video game, featuring none other than the man himself. Miles Morales! We have a lot to unpack here, so let’s discuss.
Firstly, Miles. The first thing we see in this trailer is Mile’s suit slowly flaking off as orange tendrils of electricity slither along his arms. The camera slowly pans over to Mile’s face as his masks flakes away, and he grits his teeth at whatever this new threat is. With a narration from Peter, Miles shouts and the screen fades to black.

It’s obvious that Miles is much older in this new game. Early 20s maybe? Already, as the music kicks in, and the hype rises even further, we see a glimpse of the web swinging. It looks mostly the same, except Miles commits an aerial move at the end of a swing. Are we going to see a more in depth version of the aerial acrobatics from Spiderman PS4? If anyone remembers the aerial acrobatic upgrades in Spiderman 2, I think something like that would make a fascinating return in this game. I can’t wait to swing through the snowy streets of New York City.

If you look closely, it appears the setting of this game takes place during the holiday season. A Spiderman game with a holiday setting that is releasing in the holiday season? Be still my heart! 2020, I’m looking at you, you better not ruin this! I’m getting flashbacks of Batman: Arkham Origins. Not the best game in the series, but that doesn’t stop me from playing it every year during the holiday season. It seems to me that Spiderman PS5 will be replacing Batman’s spot. Sorry, dark knight!

The rest of the trailer appears to be clips from the game itself, showing off the engine, the graphics, and the stylish moves Miles (and you, the player) can act out. Already we can see how colorful and vibrant this game is going to be. Anybody getting “Into the Spiderverse” vibes from this trailer? These clips show Miles fighting thugs, swinging through the city, saving civilians, and just being Spiderman. The music in the background is a perfect fit for the vibe this game is giving off.
One particular scene shows that same orange electricity, and Miles is using it against a thug. A suit power? What does that mean for the scene in the beginning of the trailer? Speaking of suits, look at that beauty. I wonder if Insomniac will have unlockable suits in this game, as that was one of the highlights of Spiderman PS4.

At the end of the trailer, Miles slips his mask off, and we get a much clearer image of his face. This trailer not only shows off the game, but the power of the PS5. I see what you did there, Sony. But I wonder if the game will truly look this good, or if we’re going to get a downgrade like we usually do in gaming. Only time can tell.

One particular scene that interests me is where a holograph of Mile’s spiderman is fighting thugs. I’m horrifically reminded of Screwball’s missions in Spiderman PS4. Are these making a return? Or is this some other kind of side activity? Either way, if it means more combat, I’m in!

The city is getting wrecked at several shots in this game. Miles appears to be saving several civilians in their cars on what we can only assume is a collapsing bridge. Another scene shows him dodging some rolling police cars. A new villain? What could be causing so much destruction? If you look carefully at the beginning of the shot, it almost looks like someone on a motorcycle that Miles is chasing. Who could that be, I wonder?

One thing that is noticeably lacking in this trailer is Peter Parker. His voice over is in the very beginning, and that’s it. Don’t confuse this as criticism. Peter stepping aside to let Miles take over is exactly what we all wanted in a new game. I just wonder what this means for the fate of Peter Parker, however.
Whatever this game holds, I have faith that Insomniac is going to deliver us a Spiderman game to rival the last one. And for them to release this trailer so close to the game is a smart move. Now we know we won’t have to wait long until we get our hands on it. I can’t wait to see what they show off in the gameplay trailer!
Bonus: Miles has quite the stylish coat.
